CEH vs OSCP: Which Certification Should You Take First?

CEH and OSCP are the two certifications Indian students ask about most when they want to become penetration testers. They are very different exams, aimed at different stages. A note on bias: we are part of an EC-Council Accredited Training Center group and train for CEH, not for OSCP. We have tried to compare them fairly.

CEH in Brief

The Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH v13) from EC-Council covers the whole range of ethical hacking across 20 modules. The main exam has 125 multiple-choice questions in 4 hours. An optional practical exam adds 20 hands-on challenges in 6 hours. It is widely recognized by name by HR teams and often appears in job listings. Details from EC-Council's CEH page; see our CEH v13 exam guide.

OSCP in Brief

The OffSec Certified Professional (OSCP) comes with OffSec's PEN-200 course. The exam is fully practical: 23 hours and 45 minutes to compromise machines in a lab, including an Active Directory set, followed by 24 hours to write a professional report. It is known for being demanding and is respected by technical penetration testing teams. Since November 2024, passing awards both the lifetime OSCP and an OSCP+ that is valid for three years unless renewed. Check OffSec's site for current rules and prices.

Side by Side

  • What it tests. CEH: broad knowledge, plus hands-on skill if you take the practical. OSCP: deep hands-on skill and reporting under time pressure.
  • Difficulty. CEH is approachable for beginners with good preparation. OSCP expects solid fundamentals and a lot of practice first.
  • Who notices it. CEH helps with HR screening and with many corporate and government-linked roles. OSCP carries weight with technical interviewers in penetration testing teams.
  • Validity. CEH renews through EC-Council's continuing education policy. OSCP is lifetime; OSCP+ needs renewal every three years.

Which First?

For most beginners: fundamentals and lab skills first, then CEH, then a fully practical certification. CEH gives you the map and a recognized credential early. A practical exam such as OSCP or EC-Council's CPENT AI is far easier to pass once you have spent months testing networks and Active Directory by hand. Taking OSCP with no foundation is a common and expensive mistake.

Do You Need Either?

Neither is legally required, and neither guarantees a job. Employers hire people who can show work: reports, write-ups and how they explain a finding in an interview. A certification adds weight to that evidence; it does not replace it. Our certification roadmap shows how CEH, Security+, OSCP and CISSP fit together.

Building the Skills First

Our network and Active Directory penetration testing course teaches the hands-on method both practical exams test: scanning, exploitation, Active Directory attack paths and reporting. Many students add CEH alongside it.
