CEH vs CPENT AI: Which EC-Council Exam Is Next?

CEH and CPENT AI are both EC-Council penetration testing certifications, but they test very different things. CEH is the broad, widely recognized first step. CPENT AI is the advanced, fully practical one. Format details below come from EC-Council's CEH page and EC-Council's CPENT page (see our CPENT AI page for the retrieved date); EC-Council can change them, so confirm before booking.

The Two Exams Side by Side

  • CEH: 125 multiple-choice questions in 4 hours, with an optional 6-hour practical of 20 challenges.
  • CPENT AI: 100% practical and proctored, either two 12-hour sessions or one 24-hour exam, plus a penetration test report due within seven days.
  • Passing score: CEH typically 60% to 85% depending on the exam form. For CPENT, EC-Council states at least 70% in one place and a form-specific cut score of 60% to 85% in another, with 90% or more earning CPENT + LPT (Master); check which applies to you.
  • Eligibility: CEH has no fixed prerequisite, though EC-Council recommends at least two years of IT security experience. CPENT accepts two years of information security experience, or CEH, or similar knowledge.

What Each One Is For

CEH shows breadth: you know the attack lifecycle from reconnaissance to cryptography. That is why recruiters recognize it. CPENT shows depth: you can scope a test, enumerate, exploit, pivot through a network and write it up under time pressure. A hiring manager for a penetration tester reads the second as stronger evidence of skill, but the first as the easier door to open.

Do You Need CEH Before CPENT?

No. EC-Council lists CEH as one route to CPENT eligibility, next to two years of experience or similar knowledge. Whether you should take CEH first is a different question: if you are new, CEH gives you a map of the field and the vocabulary; if you already work in security, you may go straight to hands-on practice.

Cost

Our fees are ₹36,000 + 18% GST (₹42,480 in total) for CEH and ₹45,000 + 18% GST (₹53,100 in total) for CPENT AI. Each EC-Council certification fee includes one exam attempt. The practical retake, proctoring and renewal terms differ between providers, so ask for them in writing; our CEH cost guide lists what to ask.

A Sensible Order for Most Students

  • Fresher: build the basics first (networking, Linux, web), then CEH, then hands-on projects, then CPENT. Start with the beginner roadmap.
  • Working IT or network professional: build lab practice on the Network and Active Directory course, then decide between CEH for the credential and CPENT for the proof.
  • Aiming at web security: consider WAHS or COASP alongside, since CPENT focuses on networks and infrastructure.

Do Not Skip the Practice

CPENT's format punishes anyone who learned only from slides. Whichever certificate you choose, spend more time in a lab than in a video. Our penetration testing phases guide and report-writing guide show what the practical work looks like.
