CPENT AI vs OSCP: Which Should You Take?

CPENT AI and OSCP are both fully practical penetration testing exams, and students often ask which is harder or which employers prefer. Neither answer is simple. A note on bias: we are part of an EC-Council Accredited Training Center group and train for EC-Council certifications, not for OSCP, so we have tried to stick to published facts. EC-Council facts come from EC-Council's CPENT AI page (read November 5, 2026); OSCP facts are as we published them in our CEH vs OSCP guide. Check OffSec's site for current rules and prices.

Formats Side by Side

  • CPENT AI: 100% practical, proctored, either two 12-hour sessions or one 24-hour exam, with a penetration test report due within seven days. Ranges are multi-disciplinary and include IoT.
  • OSCP: a fully practical exam of 23 hours and 45 minutes to compromise machines in a lab, including an Active Directory set, then 24 hours to write a professional report.
  • Training: CPENT AI comes with EC-Council's program (self-study, live online or in person). OSCP comes with OffSec's PEN-200 course.

Which One Is Harder?

Both are demanding, and people who have taken both disagree. A fairer question is which skills each one tests. CPENT AI leans toward moving across segmented and filtered networks, reaching into IoT and OT, and writing a full report. OSCP leans toward compromising a set of machines, including an Active Directory environment, in one long day. Neither is a quiz you can cram for.

Recognition and Fit

  • OSCP carries a strong reputation with technical penetration testing teams and is often named in senior and technical job listings.
  • CPENT AI is part of the EC-Council family, and it sits naturally after CEH for people already working in that ecosystem, including many corporate and government-linked employers.
  • Neither is legally required for any role, and neither guarantees a job.

Eligibility and Renewal

EC-Council lists two years of security experience, or CEH, or similar knowledge, as eligibility for CPENT AI, and states a one-year validity maintained under its continuing education policy. OSCP is lifetime, and since November 2024 passing also awards an OSCP+ valid for three years unless renewed. Confirm current rules with each body.

How to Choose Without Guessing

  • Collect 20 job listings for the roles you want in Hyderabad or remote. Count how many name each certification.
  • Ask two penetration testers you can reach which one their team respects.
  • Check the total cost in writing: course, exam attempt, retake and renewal.
  • If you are a fresher, do neither yet. Build lab hours first.

A Sensible Order

For most students: fundamentals, then a hands-on course, then CEH if you want a recognized first credential, then one fully practical exam. Which one comes last depends on the listings you collected. Our CEH vs CPENT AI guide and CPENT AI format guide fill in the rest.
