There are dozens of certifications. This guide explains how they fit together, which suit a beginner, and how to choose by the job you want, without paying for exams you do not need yet.

First, What a Certification Is and Is Not

A certification is an exam issued by a certifying body such as EC-Council, CompTIA, ISC2, ISACA or OffSec. It shows you passed that exam. It does not replace hands-on skill, which is what interviewers test. Exam fees are set by the certifying bodies, change often and are usually separate from course fees, so check the official site before you plan.

A Simple Ladder

StageExamplesWho it suits
Entry levelISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC), CompTIA Security+Beginners who want a recognized foundation
OffensiveEC-Council CEH, CompTIA PenTest+, OffSec OSCP, EC-Council CPENTAspiring ethical hackers and penetration testers
DefensiveCompTIA CySA+, EC-Council CSA and CNDAspiring SOC and blue-team analysts
Management and auditISC2 CISSP, ISACA CISM and CISAPeople with several years of experience moving into leadership or audit

CISSP requires several years of professional experience (five, or four with a qualifying degree or credential), so it is not a first certification.

Which One Should a Beginner Do First?

  • Want a foundation and a recognized name? An entry-level certification such as ISC2 CC or CompTIA Security+ gives a broad base. Check the current exam details on the official sites.
  • Want to go into ethical hacking? CEH v13 is a common starting point for the offensive route, and CPENT AI is a hands-on step beyond it.
  • Want to become a SOC analyst? Look at CND v4 and CSA v2, alongside practical SIEM work.
  • Not sure yet? Build the foundations and a lab first, then pick a certification that matches the job listings you are targeting.

How to Choose by Role

  • Read ten job listings for the role you want and note which certifications they name.
  • Prefer a certification that appears in your target employers' listings.
  • Choose hands-on exams if you want to prove practical skill.
  • Do not collect certificates before you have done real lab work.

Certification or Program?

A certification exam tests one body of knowledge. A program such as our Offensive Security Track builds a lab, reports and supervised practice, and you can take an EC-Council certification alongside it. Each EC-Council certification fee includes one exam attempt. We confirm the combined price in writing. See the course syllabus for what each course covers.

Common Questions

Which cybersecurity certification should I do first?

For a broad foundation, an entry-level certification such as ISC2 CC or CompTIA Security+. For an ethical hacking route, CEH is a common first step. Match the choice to the job listings you are targeting.

Is CEH good for beginners?

CEH is widely taken as a first step toward ethical hacking and suits beginners and intermediate learners. The exam tests knowledge, so pair it with hands-on lab practice.

Do I need a certification to get a cybersecurity job?

Not always. Many employers value hands-on proof, such as lab work and reports, as much as certificates. Certifications help get through screening for some roles.

Can I take CISSP as a fresher?

Not in practice. CISSP requires several years of professional experience in security, so it suits people later in their careers.

Does the program fee include the certification exam?

No. Each EC-Council certification fee includes one exam attempt. Each certification has its own fee on its page, and we confirm the combined price in writing.
