How to Start a Career in Ethical Hacking: A Beginner Roadmap

Ethical hacking means testing systems with permission, to find weaknesses before real attackers do. Most beginners get stuck because they start with hacking tools. The people who progress start with fundamentals and add skills in a sensible order. This roadmap follows that order.

1Learn How Networks Work

Almost every attack travels over a network, so you cannot understand an attack without understanding the network under it. Spend your first weeks on the basics:

  • The TCP/IP model and how a request travels from your browser to a server
  • IP addressing, subnets, ports and common protocols such as DNS, HTTP and HTTPS
  • What firewalls, routers and switches do
  • How to read a packet capture in Wireshark

2Get Comfortable with Linux and the Command Line

Most security tools run on Linux, and most servers you will test run it too. Learn to move around the file system, manage permissions, work with processes and chain commands together. A distribution built for security work, such as Kali Linux, is useful once you can already find your way around a normal Linux system.

3Learn a Little Scripting

You do not need to be a software engineer. You do need to read code and automate small jobs. Python is the most common first choice, and Bash is handy for quick tasks. Start by writing small scripts that parse a log file or check which ports are open on your own machine.

4Understand How Web Applications Fail

Web applications are the most common target in real engagements. Learn how a web app handles requests, sessions and logins, then study the common weakness categories. Our guide to the OWASP Top 10 for beginners is a good place to begin.

5Practice Only Where You Have Permission

Testing a system you do not own, without written permission, can be a criminal offense under India's Information Technology Act, even if your intentions are good. Build your own practice lab, use deliberately vulnerable training applications, and work inside the lab environment that your course provides. Permission is what makes hacking ethical.

6Add a Structured Program and a Recognized Credential

Once the fundamentals make sense, a structured course gives you a complete methodology, guided labs and a certification that employers recognize. The Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH v13) program covers the five phases of ethical hacking across 20 modules and suits beginners and intermediate learners. After that, you can specialize in web applications with WAHS or move to advanced penetration testing with CPENT AI.

7Build Proof of Your Skills

Employers want evidence. Keep short write-ups of each lab you complete: what you tested, what you found, how you found it and how you would fix it. A handful of clear reports shows more than a long list of tool names.

Mistakes That Slow Beginners Down

  • Jumping to exploitation tools before learning networking and Linux
  • Collecting certificates without hands-on practice
  • Following tutorials without understanding why each step works
  • Practicing on systems you have no permission to test
