Ethical Hacking Interview Questions for Freshers, with Answers
These are questions commonly asked in entry-level ethical hacking and penetration testing interviews, with short model answers. Use them to find gaps, then build real examples from your own lab. We cannot promise any interview or job.
1. What Is Ethical Hacking, and What Makes It Ethical?
Testing systems with the owner's written permission, within an agreed scope, to find and report weaknesses. Permission and scope are what separate it from crime; see is ethical hacking legal in India.
2. What Are the Phases of a Penetration Test?
Planning and scoping, reconnaissance, scanning and enumeration, exploitation, post-exploitation, and reporting. See penetration testing phases explained.
3. Vulnerability Assessment Versus Penetration Testing?
An assessment finds and lists weaknesses; a penetration test tries to exploit them to show impact. See VAPT explained.
4. Black Box, Grey Box and White Box Testing?
Black box: no prior knowledge. Grey box: partial knowledge such as a user account. White box: full access to documentation or source.
5. What Does Nmap Do, and What Do -sS and -sV Mean?
It discovers hosts and open ports. -sS is a SYN (half-open) scan and -sV detects service versions. See Nmap for beginners.
6. Explain SQL Injection and How to Prevent It.
Untrusted input changes the meaning of a database query. Prevent it with parameterized queries, least-privilege database accounts and input validation. See SQL injection explained.
7. What Are the Types of XSS?
Reflected, stored and DOM-based. Prevent it with output encoding and a content security policy. See XSS explained.
8. What Is IDOR?
Changing an identifier, such as an order number, to reach another user's data because the server does not check ownership. See IDOR explained.
9. What Is the OWASP Top 10?
A widely used list of the most critical web application risks. See OWASP Top 10 explained.
10. How Does Burp Suite Help in Testing?
It proxies browser traffic so you can inspect, change and replay requests. See Burp Suite for beginners.
11. What Is Privilege Escalation?
Gaining higher access than you were given, vertically (to admin) or horizontally (to another user). See privilege escalation explained.
12. What Is Pivoting?
Using one compromised machine to reach networks you could not reach directly. See pivoting explained.
13. How Do You Handle a Critical Finding During a Test?
Stop, confirm it carefully without causing harm, and tell the client contact immediately according to the agreed process. Do not wait for the final report.
14. What Goes in a Good Report?
An executive summary, scope, method, findings with severity, evidence, impact and fix, and a retest note. See how to write a penetration testing report.
15. Walk Me Through Something You Found or Built.
Describe a lab target, the flaw, how you confirmed it, and the fix. A small, honest example beats a long list of tools. Our home lab guide and resume guide help you present it.
Certifications
Certifications help with screening. See the CEH v13 exam guide and CEH vs OSCP.
