Types of Hackers: White Hat, Black Hat, Gray Hat and More

The word "hacker" originally meant someone who understands a system well enough to make it do unexpected things. Today it is used for everyone from professional security testers to criminals. The "hat" labels are a simple way to tell them apart. Here is what each means, and why only one of them is a career.

White Hat Hackers

Security professionals who test systems with the owner's permission to find weaknesses before criminals do. Penetration testers, red teamers and bug bounty hunters working within program rules are white hats. This is the legal, paid career that courses like ours prepare you for.

Black Hat Hackers

People who break into systems without permission for money, data, disruption or revenge. Ransomware gangs, fraudsters and data thieves fall here. In India, this is an offense under the Information Technology Act; see is ethical hacking legal in India.

Gray Hat Hackers

People who test systems without permission but without obvious criminal intent, and then tell the owner or the public. The intention may be good, but the act is still unauthorized access, and it can still be prosecuted. Many beginners drift into gray hat behavior by "just checking" a website. Do not.

Other Kinds You Will Read About

  • Hacktivists attack for a political or social cause, often by defacing websites or leaking data.
  • State-sponsored groups work for or with governments on espionage or sabotage. Security reports often call them advanced persistent threats (APTs).
  • Insiders are employees or contractors who misuse their access, deliberately or carelessly.
  • Script kiddies use tools and scripts written by others without understanding them.
  • Red and blue teams are not types of criminal: red teams simulate attackers for an organization, blue teams defend it.

Why the Difference Matters for Your Career

Employers in security hire for trust. They need to know you will stay within scope, protect client data and report honestly. Anything on your record or online profile that suggests unauthorized testing can end an application. Build your skills in labs and practice platforms, and keep your history clean.

Becoming a White Hat

Start with fundamentals, practice legally and learn a professional method. Our beginner roadmap sets out the steps, and our courses (Offensive Security Track and SOC and DFIR) teach application, network and SOC skills with scope and authorization at the start of every course.
