How Long Does It Take to Learn Ethical Hacking?

Short answer: a few months to get the fundamentals, several more months of practice to be ready for an entry-level role, and years to become an expert. The exact time depends on where you start and how many hours you put in each week. Here is a realistic breakdown, based on what we see with our students.

1Fundamentals (About 2 to 3 Months Part-Time)

Networking, the Linux command line, how Windows and Active Directory work, how a web application handles requests, and some basic scripting. Without these, tools make no sense. A graduate in computer science or IT may move faster here; someone from a non-IT background should expect it to take longer.

2Core Skills and Methodology (About 3 Months)

Learning the method a professional follows: scoping, reconnaissance, scanning, exploitation, privilege escalation and reporting for networks, Active Directory and web applications, or log analysis and investigation if you choose the defensive side. This is the stage a structured course compresses most, because it gives you the right order and labs that work.

3Practice Until It Is Routine (Ongoing)

Most people are not job-ready the day a course ends. They become ready after repeating the work: more practice machines, more write-ups, a few mock interviews. Plan for at least a few months of steady practice after your core training. In total, many motivated beginners reach entry-level readiness in roughly 6 to 12 months. That is our estimate, not a promise; some take less, many take more.

4Specialization (Years)

Advanced Active Directory attacks, cloud security, mobile apps, red teaming, malware analysis or detection engineering each take years to master. Nobody knows all of them. Pick one direction after your first role.

What Makes the Biggest Difference

  • Hours of hands-on practice, not hours of video watched
  • A consistent schedule, such as two to three hours a day, rather than occasional long weekends
  • Writing things down. Notes and reports turn practice into skill you can show
  • Feedback from someone who has done the work professionally
  • Starting with fundamentals instead of jumping straight to hacking tools

How Our Program Fits This Timeline

Our courses cover stages 1 and 2 in 6-week blocks of 90 hours: SOC and DFIR for fundamentals and defense, then the Offensive Security Track, application security followed by advanced network and Active Directory testing. Each course ends with an assessed lab and a report. You will still need to practice afterward; we tell every student that before they join.
