SOC and blue team
The Threat Intelligence Lifecycle Explained for Beginners
Threat intelligence is not a feed of bad IP addresses. It is information that has been collected, analyzed and shaped so someone can make a decision. The lifecycle is the loop that gets you there.
The Loop
- Requirements and planning: what does the team need to know? Which systems and attackers matter to us?
- Collection: gather data from logs, reports, open sources and sharing groups.
- Processing: clean, de-duplicate and organize the raw data.
- Analysis: work out what it means for you, and how sure you are.
- Dissemination: deliver it in a form the reader can use.
- Feedback: ask whether it helped, then adjust the requirements.
Four Types of Intelligence
- Strategic: high level, for leaders. Which threats matter to the business and why.
- Operational: about specific campaigns and attacker intent.
- Tactical: how attackers work, such as the techniques mapped in MITRE ATT&CK.
- Technical: specific indicators such as hashes, domains and IP addresses.
Indicators go stale quickly, so technical intelligence has the shortest shelf life.
Free Sources to Try
Government and vendor advisories, malware reports, and open sources covered in OSINT for beginners. Pick two sources, read them weekly and write a three-line summary of each report: what happened, who is affected and what a defender should do.
Common Mistakes
- Collecting everything and analyzing nothing.
- Treating a single indicator as proof of an attack.
- Writing reports that never say what the reader should do.
Where This Leads
Intelligence supports threat hunting and SOC work. EC-Council's CTIA covers the lifecycle in 8 modules; see the CTIA exam guide.
