SOC and blue team
SOC Tier 1 vs Tier 2 vs Tier 3: What Each Analyst Does
Most security operations centers split analysts into tiers. Knowing the difference helps you plan your first role and your next one. Teams organize differently, so treat this as a typical pattern, not a rule.
Tier 1: the Front Line
A Tier 1 analyst watches the alert queue. For each alert the job is to decide quickly: is this real, is it noise, or do I need help? You read the alert, check the related logs, look up the IP or file hash, and either close it with a note or pass it up with what you found.
Tier 2: the Investigator
A Tier 2 analyst takes the cases Tier 1 escalates. The work is deeper: building a timeline across several systems, scoping how far an attacker got, running containment steps with other teams and sometimes starting threat hunting.
Tier 3: the Specialist
Larger SOCs add a Tier 3: senior analysts who handle the hardest incidents, analyze malware, build new detections and mentor others, often alongside threat hunting. Some teams call this role a lead analyst or threat hunter, and small SOCs may have only two tiers.
Skills for Each
- Tier 1: reading logs, Windows event IDs, basic networking, phishing triage, clear written notes.
- Tier 2: SIEM searching in Splunk or Wazuh, MITRE ATT&CK mapping, incident response, malware and forensics basics.
Where Certifications Fit
EC-Council describes its CSA v2 certification for Tier I and Tier II analysts. See the CSA exam guide for the format and modules. A certificate helps with screening; hands-on practice is what you will be asked about in interviews.
Moving Up
- Keep a personal log of cases you handled and what you learned.
- Write down every detection you tuned or improved.
- Learn one SIEM well before touching a second one.
- Practice explaining an incident in five sentences.
