SOC Analyst Interview Questions for Freshers, with Answers

These are questions commonly asked in entry-level SOC interviews, with short model answers. Do not memorize them word for word; interviewers can tell. Use your own lab experience to add detail. We cannot promise any interview or job.

1. What Does a SOC Analyst Do?

Monitors alerts, decides which are real, investigates, escalates and documents. See what does a SOC analyst do.

2. What Is the Difference Between a Threat, a Vulnerability and a Risk?

A vulnerability is a weakness, a threat is something that could exploit it, and risk is the likelihood and impact of that happening.

3. What Is a False Positive and a False Negative?

A false positive is an alert on harmless activity. A false negative is a real attack that raised no alert. False negatives are more dangerous, false positives waste time.

4. What Is a SIEM?

A system that collects and correlates logs and raises alerts. See what is a SIEM.

5. How Do You Investigate a Phishing Email?

Check the sender and headers, links and attachments (without opening them), search for other recipients, and block and report. See how to analyze a phishing email.

6. Which Windows Event IDs Do You Know?

4624 for a successful logon, 4625 for a failed one and 4688 for process creation. Sysmon adds Event ID 1 for process creation with the command line; see Windows event IDs and Sysmon.

7. A User Has 200 Failed Logins and Then One Success. What Do You Do?

Treat it as a likely compromised account: check the source address, what the account did after login, force a password reset, reset sessions, and look for the same source against other accounts.

8. Explain the TCP Three-Way Handshake.

SYN from client, SYN-ACK from server, ACK from client. A flood of SYNs without the final ACK can mean a scan or a denial-of-service attempt; see tcpdump.

9. IDS or IPS?

An IDS detects and alerts; an IPS sits inline and can block. See firewalls, IDS and IPS.

10. What Is MITRE ATT&CK?

A public catalogue of attacker tactics and techniques used to describe and test detections. See what is MITRE ATT&CK.

11. What Are the Phases of Incident Response?

Preparation, detection and analysis, containment, eradication, recovery and lessons learned. See incident response steps.

12. Hashing Versus Encryption?

Hashing is one way and is used to check integrity or store passwords. Encryption is reversible with a key and protects confidentiality.

13. What Is Lateral Movement?

An attacker moving from one compromised machine to others inside the network, often with stolen credentials. See pivoting explained.

14. Tell Me About a Lab You Built.

The best answer in a fresher interview. Describe the machines, the logs you collected, one attack you ran and the alert you wrote. Our home lab guide shows how to start.

15. How Do You Stay Current?

Name two or three real sources you read, and one thing you learned recently. Honest and specific beats a long list.

Scenario Questions

  • A user reports a suspicious email. Ask who else received it, check the sender, headers and links in a safe way, block the sender and links, reset the password if the user clicked, and record what you did.
  • An alert shows a laptop connecting to a rare address at 3 a.m. Identify the process behind the connection, check what the address is, look at what else the machine did that hour, and isolate it if the evidence supports it.
  • Your SIEM shows a successful login from a new country. Confirm with the user, check what the account did after login, force a reset and review other accounts for the same source.
  • Antivirus quarantined a file on a server. Find how it arrived, check whether it ran before it was quarantined, search other machines for the same hash, and note the outcome.

Interviewers listen for a calm order of steps and for what you would verify, not for a perfect answer.
