Certification
CND vs CSA: Which Defender Certification First?
CND and CSA are both EC-Council blue team certifications, and students often ask which to take first. They aim at different jobs. CND covers defending networks and endpoints broadly; CSA is about working in a security operations center. CND facts come from EC-Council's CND page (read November 5, 2026) and CSA facts from our CSA v2 page (see it for the retrieved date). Confirm both with EC-Council before booking.
The Two Exams Side by Side
- CND (312-38): 100 multiple-choice questions in 4 hours, 20 modules, a cut score of 60% to 85% depending on the exam form.
- CSA v2 (312-39): 100 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours, 8 modules, 70% to pass.
- Eligibility: CND asks for fundamental networking knowledge. CSA asks for one year of work experience in network administration or security, unless you attend official training.
What Each One Is About
CND is the broad foundation: attacks and defense strategy, perimeter and endpoint security, cloud and wireless, monitoring, incident response, continuity and threat intelligence. CSA is narrower and more role-specific: how a SOC works, alert triage, using a SIEM, threat hunting and incident handling. If you can already describe how a firewall and an IDS differ, CSA may be the better next step; if not, start with CND.
Which First?
- Fresher with some networking: CND first. It builds the vocabulary and gives you a recognized credential.
- Network or system administrator: CND, because it formalizes what you partly know, then CSA when you want a SOC role.
- Already working in a SOC or with one year of relevant experience: CSA may be enough, and CND becomes optional.
- Aiming at digital forensics or incident response: look at ECIH and CHFI after the basics.
Do Not Stop at the Exam
Neither certification replaces hands-on skill. SOC interviews test whether you can search logs, build a timeline and explain what happened. That practice is the core of our SOC, Splunk, Wazuh and DFIR course, an academy course covering the core concepts of several EC-Council certifications, with its own assessment. It is not EC-Council courseware, and exam vouchers are separate. Our SOC analyst guide shows what the daily work looks like.
Cost
Our fees are ₹34,000 + 18% GST (₹40,120 in total) for CND and ₹34,000 + 18% GST (₹40,120 in total) for CSA v2. Each EC-Council certification fee includes one exam attempt. Ask any provider in writing about retakes, proctoring and renewal; our CEH cost guide lists the questions, and they apply to every EC-Council exam.
