How to Learn Ethical Hacking for Free: A Step-by-Step Plan
Everything you need to start ethical hacking is available free: courses, labs, practice machines and tools. What is missing is usually a sensible order and the discipline to keep going. This plan gives you both. It is how we would learn if we were starting again with no budget.
Rule 1: Practice Only Where It Is Legal
Use your own virtual machines and platforms built for practice. Never test real websites or networks without written permission; it can be an offense under India's IT Act. See is ethical hacking legal in India.
Month 1: Foundations
- Networking: IP addresses, ports, TCP and UDP, DNS, HTTP; see networking basics for cybersecurity
- Linux command line: OverTheWire's Bandit wargame is free and excellent
- Cisco Networking Academy's free Introduction to Cybersecurity course for the big picture
Month 2: Your Own Lab and First Tools
- Build a free home lab with VirtualBox, Kali Linux and a deliberately vulnerable machine; see our home lab guide
- Learn Nmap on your lab; see Nmap for beginners
- Start a notes file for every command you learn
Month 3: Web Application Hacking
- PortSwigger Web Security Academy: free labs from the makers of Burp Suite, from beginner to expert
- Burp Suite Community Edition, which is free; see Burp Suite for beginners
- OWASP Juice Shop, a free, intentionally insecure web shop you run locally
- Read the OWASP Top 10 alongside
Month 4: Systems and Active Directory
- Free practice machines on TryHackMe and Hack The Box (both have free tiers)
- A small Active Directory lab using Microsoft's free evaluation versions of Windows Server
- Read Active Directory attacks explained
Month 5 Onward: Show Your Work
- Write up each machine or lab you complete: what you found, how, and how to fix it
- Publish write-ups only for retired machines and your own labs, as platform rules allow
- Try a beginner-friendly capture the flag (CTF) event
- Join local security meetups and online communities to ask questions
What Free Learning Lacks
Free resources are excellent, but no one checks your work, and it is easy to stall. If you reach a point where you want structure, feedback and a graded portfolio, compare paid options carefully; our free courses guide explains when paying makes sense. Our Offensive Security Track and SOC and DFIR course are options, and you can attend free trial classes first.
